Kenneth John Carpenter (1916-2000) worked on handpresses at University of California, Berkeley, where he worked in the Rare
Book Department until 1962. He then moved to the University of Nevada, Reno. While an associate library director at UNR, in
1965 he purchased a Columbian press from Nottingham, England and established the Black Rock Press at the university. The first
book issued by the press was William Everson's Springing of the Blade. Carpenter retired in 1980.
