Abstract:

Journal, 1853-1868, gives an account of his service in the British Royal Artillery (1853-62) on tours of duty primarily in India and China, and continues with information on his life in China subsequent to leaving the army, working in British customs and as a drill instructor for Chinese troops, and on his travels in the interior. Includes also comments on life of the British soldier in the colonies and spiritual reflections.
Journal, 1890, describes trip taken up the Yangtzee River aboard a junk from Ichang to Chunking.
With these: several pages of "Chinese Proverbs."
