Abstract:

Contains scrapbook, correspondence, fencing documents, writings, and fencing equipment and other realia. The scrapbook covers Palffy-Alper's professional career as a fencing instructor for the U.S. Army in Europe, France, Toronto, Canada, San Francisco and as a professor at U.C. Berkeley. Correspondents include Marcel Marceau and inquiries about his work. Fencing materials document his work with the U.C. Drama Department and competitions. Writings include "Creating letters with objects," and "Fencing for the blind." Also includes articles, awards and ephemera.

Julius Palffy-Alpar was born in Hunyard-Kristyor, Transylvania, which was then part of Hungary, on May 19, 1908. He graduated from the Toldi Miklos Royal Hungarian Sports Institute in 1935 and became a professor of physical education and fencing at the Hungarian Military Academy in Budapest. He was a faculty member in the Department of Physical Education at the University of California, Berkeley from 1962-1975. Palffy-Alpar taught Marcel Marceau how to fence and the two became friends.
