Title:Joseph Warren Matthews papers, 1865-1900
Creator/Contributor:Matthews, Joseph Warren, 1842-1900, creator
Contains letters, 1865-1897, to Joseph Warren Matthews and his father, John Hamilton Matthews, from members of the Matthews
family and others, relaying news and family business. Also includes letters written by Joseph Warren Matthews to family, mainly
describing his trip to gold mining country near Resurrection Bay, Alaska, and subsequent work as a farm laborer for Henry
Miller and others in the Los Banos, Calif. region, along with a diary from April 1899 to Aug. 1900, in which he describes
his work for Miller and includes records of employment and expenses. With these are two undated diaries kept by Matthew's
father: one covers his train trip from Hollister to Washington, D.C. and return, and the other includes only sporadic entries,
and accounts written by other family members.
Also contains an autograph album, ca. 1883, with signatures of members and officers of the Calif. State Assembly (possibly
collected in the State Assembly office of John Hamilton Matthews?), and a record book of the Antelope branch of the San Benito
Temperance Reform Club, including descriptions of activitites, a page of accounts from the Antelope Sunday school, a music
score, and list of local signatories of the temperance pledge. Also includes a public school register for the Round Springs
District of San Benito Co., Feb. 1896-June 1900, containing attendance records, information on curriculum, a list of school
property, instructions to teachers, and rules and regulations for California public schools, ca. 1896, and finally, a cash
book, ca. 1882-1886, belonging to Ed. Matthews.
