Abstract:

Album and accompanying documentation for a soldier who was assigned to Fiji during World War II, injured, and returned home to McCloskey General Hospital in Texas with honorable discharge. Album contains black and white photographs, postcards, booklets and printed ephemera, beginning with Alishouskas' enlistment and goodbye party at home; training in Fort Dix, Fort Monmouth (New Jersey), and Camp Stoneman (California); arrival in Fiji and assignment to Company Clerk. Following section contains black and white photos of time in Fiji, including fellow soldiers, military buildings, horses; native Fijians; street scenes; sports; a fire-walking ceremony; scenic views. A memo book containing Japanese handwriting, captioned as being taken from a dead Japanese soldier at Guadalcanal, implies that Alishouskas was sent to the Solomon Islands for the Guadacanal Campaign, presumably where he was injured. Album ends with paperwork detailing his return home. Also includes a handbook for Fiji, a booklet from McCloskey Hospital, and a brief overview of Alishouskas' military career.
