This collection mainly documents a pay dispute that arose between the U. S. Treasury and Colonel Strong. In 1878, the U.S.
Treasury claimed to have overpaid him and Colonel Strong disagreed.

Note:
James Clark Strong was born in New York in 1826. He came through California in 1849 on the Navy store ship "Supply" on his
way to Washington Territory where he met Captain U.S. Grant and was elected as a member of the first legislative Assembly.
He returned to New York. During the Civil War he rose in rank to Colonel of the 34th Regiment of New York Volunteers. He was
wounded in action and mustered out of the army after the Civil War. In 1896, for reasons of health he moved to California
and lived for the rest of his life in Los Gatos, California, on a ranch of 63 acres. His ranch was slightly damaged in the
06 quake. In 1910, he wrote and self-published an autobiography, from which this information has been drawn.
