Abstract:
Typescript carbon copy of a document concerning land grant cases in California. The "Index of the Spanish-Mexican private
land grant records and cases of California" (1958 ; 598 pages), contains a variety of indices of the grants by name, Court
and Board case numbers, Expediente numbers, Titulos, Tomas de Razon, and Petitioners, Grantees, etc. Also includes a document,
also authored by J.N. Bowman, titled, "The California private land granting and private land grants" (1956-1957 ; 405 pages),
which is a history of the land grant process and the various rules and regulations associated with it. Includes a table of
contents.

Jacob N. Bowman (1875-1968) was born near Greenville, Ohio. He graduated from Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio in 1896 and
then traveled abroad to study history at Heidelberg University and Leipzig University in Germany from 1896 to 1900. Bowman
taught history at Western Washington College, the University of California, Berkeley, and Washington University and from 1948
until 1955, he served as Historian at the California State Archives in Sacramento. In addition to his index on land grant
records and cases, Bowman wrote extensively on many areas of California history.
