Abstract:

Thirty-one letters from Irving Slade to his mother written from various locations including Oakland, Sacramento, Santa Clara, Mayfield, Belmont, San Miguel, Auburn, Petaluma, Cottonwood, Castroville, Salinas, San Francisco, Gazos Mill near Pescadero, Elko, Osino, and Voss Mill. He writes of his impressions of the towns, family, a job as conductor on the Oakland Street Railroad, the Mechanics Fair in San Francisco, Oakland Military Institute, work on the Western Pacific Railroad constructing a telegraph line from San Jose to San Francisco, his co-workers and their ethnic backgrounds, railroad food, other telegraph work. In letters apparently written while he was taking care of the family business in Auburn while his mother was east he writes of finances, buying and selling of cattle, and customers. In other letters he requests blankets and clothes to be sent to him, and tells of taking a situation at a ranch near Petaluma, a telegraph line job on the California and Oregon Railroad, and describes locations visited in his work. He also writes of buying horses, business opportunities for which he requests loans, a job at Gazos Mill, the Pigeon Point lighthouse nearby, and other travels and jobs.
