The Independent Order of Odd Fellows can be traced back to British fraternal lodges that began about 1730-1745. These Oddfellows
lodges subsequently split into differing factions and eventually spread abroad. The American Independent Order of Odd Fellows
was established in 1842, and became quite common in California during the Gold Rush period.
