Abstract:

The Henry Woon collection contains photographs and scrapbooks documenting Asian Americans and other people of color in the San Francisco Bay Area from the 1950s to the early 2000s. The scrapbooks, which span the 1950s to the mid-1970s, contain newspaper clippings, organizational materials, and other documents relating to the photographs. The collection also contains color photographs of local ethnic organizations and community leaders.

Henry Woon was born on November 23, 1926 in Oakland's Chinatown. After graduating from Oakland Technical High School, he joined the Army during World War II. During the Korean War, he re-entered the military as an Army Chinese interpreter. In 1956, Woon graduated from the University of California at Berkeley, having majored in Political Science with a minor in Art. For ten years, he worked for the government as a management analyst in the Programs and Management Division of the Comptrollers and another ten years for President Lyndon B. Johnson's Great Society Program. From the 1950s through the early 2000s, Woon was an avid freelance photographer and photojournalist for East West and Asian Week newspapers. He was also a community activist and a playwright.
