Foresthill (Calif.)

Note:

Late in 1856 William H. Hardy and Samuel S. Kennedy moved their general provisions business from Big Bar to Forest Hill, and two years later built the town's first fireproof building. This business successfully dealt in general provisions and mining supplies, bought gold dust, and briefly served as a Wells Fargo agent. A connected business at Horeshoe Bar was operated by J. G. Garrison. In 1863 Hardy left the business and founded the town of Hardyville at the head of navigation on the Colorado River. Kennedy continued the Forest Hill business and was soon joined by Garrison. Kennedy moved to St. Louis in 1865 and left the store in the hands of Garrison, who operated it with family members well into the 20th Century.
