Abstract:
Original manuscripts (mainly from the T.W. Norris Collection) and photocopies (from the National Archives), 1846-1859, assembled
by Francis P. Farquhar and others. Contains letters and reports as U.S. topographical engineer, including report and map of
a visit to the mines with General Bennet Riley, 1849; and a report on wagon roads and watering places between San Diego and
Fort Yuma, April 1855. With these: letter to Dr. and Mrs. Charles M. Hitchcock from Derby and members of his family, 1857-1870;
humorous articles published in the San Diego Herald, 1852-1854; some original manuscripts and drawings; and notes by Farquhar,
Winifred Davidson, and George R. Stewart respecting Derby's Phoenixiana, his pen-name, John P. Squibob, etc.
