Abstract:
Correspondence, financial records, legal documents, and reports relating to Gabriel Colvin Wharton's career as a civil engineer
specializing in railroad construction. Wharton was a VMI honors graduate and Civil War Confederate brigadier general with
the Virginia 45th Infantry, but the material in the collection relates to the period before and after the Civil War. Companies
represented in the collection include: Baltimore & Ohio Rail Road Co.; Manasses Gap R. R. Company; Norfolk & Western Railroad
Company; Orange & Alexandria Rail Road Co.; South Side R. R. Company; Southern Express Company; and the Virginia, Kentucky
& Ohio Railroad.
