Note:
George Chase was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts on April 17, 1841. His father Moses was the first white settler in the
Oakland area in 1849, and George himself came to Brooklyn, California (now a part of Oakland) five years later. He began learning
the trade of carriage painter and went to work for the firm of Cochran & Co., and then the firm of Bangle Brothers, for whom
he painted and varnished carriages, and occasionally did house painting and carpentry work. Chase later partnered with Bransom
Bangle in their own firm, but left the field in 1878 after an injury. He later joined the County Recorder's office, became
Alameda County Treasurer, and worked in real estate. At the time he wrote this diary Chase was keeping company with two women,
Jennie N-----, and Mandana (Mary) E. Boynton, whom he married in 1869. George passed away on May 17, 1919, and Mary five months
later.
