Note:
Galen Clark was born in Dublin, New Hampshire on March 28, 1814. After the death of his wife he moved to California during
the Gold Rush. In 1853 Clark setled in the Wawona, California area for health reasons, discovered the Mariposa Grove of Giant
Sequoias, and successfully lobbied the federal government for protection of the Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Grove. Clark
stayed in the Yosemite area operating a hotel and a guide service, and late in life wrote three books about Yosemite. He died
in Oakland, California on March 24, 1910.
Yosemite National Park occupied parts of Tuolumne, Mariposa, and Madera Counties in eastern California. Paiute and Sierra
Miwok people inhabited the area before the Gold Rush brought white travelers. After the efforts of many citizens, including
Galen Clark, to preserve it, President Abraham Lincoln signed a bill on June 30, 1864 creating the Yosemite Grant, and the
United States Congress established Yosemite National Park on October 1, 1890.
