George Sterling was born in Sag Harbor, Long Island, New York, in 1869, and became exposed to poetry while studying for the priesthood. He came to California after dropping his studies, became the protege of Ambrose Bierce, and developed into a renowned poet. Sterling also made the acquaintance of Jack London, joined the Bohemian Club, and became the focus of a local art colony after he and his wife moved to Carmel. In 1911, he took Clark Ashton Smith on as his protege. Before he gained literary fame, Sterling worked in real estate development for his uncle Frank C. Havens in the Oakland/Piedmont area from 1891 to 1908. Sterling committed suicide in 1926.
