Abstract:
Includes a few portraits of Frank A. Leach taken during his tenure as Superintendent of the old U.S. Mint in San Francisco.
Also includes several interior views of the Mint, probably taken in 1899, depicting employees (coiners, melters, refiners,
assayers, designers, etc.) offices, laboratories, as well as scenes of coining and other aspects of bullion and currency production
and distribution: melting, refining, adjusting, assaying and receiving. Also includes a portrait of George E. Roberts, director
of the U.S. Mint; and a group portrait depicting attendees, including Leach, of the U.S. Mint Annual Assay Commission conference
in Philadelphia, held February 10-11, 1909. Papers include an 1898 letter written to Leach from the Oakland Board of Trade;
an envelope dated 1899 that was probably used to contain most of the present photographs; and a used commemorative bookplate
with the following text: "Old Mint Museum Library, U.S. Treasury Department, San Francisco, in memory of Frank A. Leach, Superintendent,
