Abstract:
Album containing identification photographs (i.e. mug shots) of prisoners, taken upon their discharge from Folsom Prison and
the California State Prison at San Quentin. Earlier photographs are portraits of prisoners with prison identification numbers
appearing on mug shot boards positioned beneath their faces; adjacent to the prints are brief captions written on the paper
leaves that include prisoner's name, crime, county of crime and discharge date. The particular prison associated with each
of these early photographs is not specified. Later records include prisoner portrait and more elaborate typescript information,
all captured in the photographic print; descriptions include name, nationality, age, occupation, prison location and classification,
arrival and discharge dates, noteworthy physical characteristics, crime, county of crime, etc. The later records all pertain
to prisoners at Folsom. Album includes a substantial number of records, many contained in a separate section of the album,
for recidivist offenders.
