Abstract:
First installment of photographer's archive includes selected digital prints from 3 bodies of work: Sap in their veins, Inspiration,
and Fallen tree (alternatively titled Falling tree). Sap in their veins (AX box 1), taken 1987-1988 and 2004, contains chiefly
portraits of loggers, with a few images of loggers at work, logging machinery and tools, and loggers' families. Fallen tree
(AX box 1) contains images taken in 1989 chiefly depicting trees during the motion of falling after being cut. Inspiration
(AX box 2) contains studio portraits of men, posing per Bayles' instructions: "Without speaking aloud, I would like you to
take a few moments to find your unique power and passion and let it fill you up. When you are ready, look right into the lens
and tell us about it with just your eyes"; portraits accompanied by personal statements of subjects. Collection also includes
oversize portrait of Helumt Gernsheim taken by Bayles in the 1980s (B folder). Other materials (PIC box 1) include a summary
of the contents of this installment; transcripts of oral history interviews with loggers Imar Alto, Don Spini, Vernon Piver,
Andrew Kaijankoski, Eino Freeman, Robert Carbaugh, John McCaffrey Sr. (late 1980s, associated with Sap in their veins project);
project proposal for The contemporary logger (late 1980s); various papers and 4 photographs pertaining to Bayles exhibition
Long days, long hours & hard work (early 1990s); and correspondence from Helmut Gernsheim and Irene Gernsheim (1984-1996)
and Ernst Haas (undated).
