Contents: journal kept by Alfred De Witt on his voyage around the Horn, Apr. 6 - Sept. 22, 1848; 26 letters, 1848-1867, written
by Alfred and 30 letters, 1849-1851, by his wife, Margaret, to family in New York, relating to their journey to California
via the Isthmus of Panama in 1849, their life in San Francisco, the business concern of De Witt & Harrison, etc.; 71 letters,
1848-1854, written by his brothers Henry, Peter and Theodore, relative to their journeys to California via the Isthmus, their
experiences in California, their views on mining, life in San Francisco, etc. Peter's letters, 1851-1854, also refer to his
mercantile ventures in Portland, Oregon, and his return to New York via China. Also included are a few letters written by
their parents, Peter and Jenat De Witt, most of them addressed to their sons.
