Abstract:
Six document facsimile reproductions of letters and paragraphs sent to the Viceroy of New Spain during early exploration of
greater California; includes correspondence from early merchant Sebastian Vizcaino and Franciscan friar Fray Junipero Serra.
Handwritten on documents 14, 16 and 17: "Photographed from the original preserved in the "Archive General de Indias" de Sevilla,
under Royal Order dated Madrid December 26,th 1883 for Adolph Sutro, Esq. of San Francisco, California."

Document No. 3: "Paragraph of a letter from the Conde de Santiago, Viceroy of New Spain, to the King of Spain, referring to
the commissioning of Sebastian Rodriguez Cermeno for a survey of the coast of the South Sea--dated 6th April, 1594."
Document No. 4: "Paragraph of a letter from the royal officials of Acapulco to the Conde de Monterrey, Viceroy of New Spain,
giving tidings of the loss of the ship San Agustin--dated 1st February, 1596."
Document No. 5: "Paragraph of a letter from the Conde de Monterrey, Viceroy of New Spain, to the King of Spain, giving notice
of the loss of the ship San Agustin and of discoveries made in her--dated 19th April, 1596."
