An article, "A letter from the gold fields" (The Gallatin County News, Jan. 22, 1981, p. 12) and xerox copy of original letter, removed from collection and added to Biographical Letter File.
Author was born in Kentucky, living most of his early life in Gallatin County. In Feb. 1849, joined Gold Rush to California, arriving in San Francisco via steamship around the Horn. In 1852, returned overland to Quincey; finally settled in Clinton, Missouri in 1855 where he worked as merchant, banker and politician.
