Pious Fund of the Californias
Missions -- California

Note:

The Pious Fund of the Californias originated in 1697 from voluntary donations made to members of the Society of Jesus enabling them to spread the Catholic faith in upper and lower California. At first the funds were placed in the hands of the missions and the missionaries, but in 1717 all of the funds were turned over to the Jesuits, who administered them until the Crown of Spain took over the fund in 1768. The new Mexican government took over administration of the fund from 1821 until 1848, except for a two year period in which the fund was placed in the hands of the Diocese of the Californias.
