David Lamont Landes (born June 9, 1941, Clarksdale, Mississippi ; died October 13, 2008, Oakland, California) was born on
a cooperative farm. He graduated in 1965 from Antioch College and received a doctorate in economics in 1973 from Washington
University. After moving to the San Francisco Bay Area, Landes taught economics at San Jose State University and at community
colleges. He was a peace, labor, and disability rights activist. The Disabled International Support Effort, (DISE) was started
in 1980 in the San Francisco Bay Area, by David Landes, Marilyn Golden, Adrian Aron and Karen Parker. DISE provided material
aid and technical assistance to disability groups in developing countries.
