Abstract:

Prints: photographs documenting activities of and persons associated with the Center for Independent Living of Berkeley, Calif. Includes numerous photographs of CIL staff at work and attending various events including parties, demonstrations and fund-raising efforts. Also includes a small number of formal portraits of staff and associated individuals. Among the CIL staff and associates depicted are Ed Roberts, Judith Heumann, Hale Zukas, Gerald Baptiste, Jan Garrett, David Lewis, Phil Chavez, Phil Draper, Michael Winter and Larry Watson. Also depicted are politicians, celebrities and journalists affiliated with various events documented in the collection, including Bill Clinton, George Herbert Walker Bush, George Deukmejian, George Miller, Alan Cranston, Shirley Dean, Ron Dellums, Milton Marks, Nancy Pelosi, Tony Bennett, Robin Williams, Shelley Duvall, Vincent Spano, Justin Dart, Robert Walden, Ray Charles, George Shearing, Harry Reasoner, Evan White and Frank Somerville. Identified events include the Section 504 demonstration of 1977 and other gatherings pertaining to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), CIL anniversaries, and CIL staff trips to Japan in 1984 and 1986. Also includes photographs of the Center's Telegraph Avenue location, files pertaining to their Youth Services activities, photographic illustrations for the 1982 CIL publication Ramps are Beautiful: The Architecture of Independence, and several contact prints. Oversize folders (AX) contain group portrait of CIL staff taken in 1975 and scenes from a Christmas in April service. Large majority of prints have no corresponding negatives.
Negatives (NEG(strip) boxes 1-3): numerous files of CIL staff, associates, events and miscellaneous subjects; several files by photographer Timothy Burman; many unidentified files; and negatives corresponding to the contact prints. Large majority of negatives have no corresponding prints.
Slides (LAN box 1): Barrier Free Design (commercially produced slide set); various CIL presentations; transportation and wheelchair files; various CIL staff, associates and events.

The Center for Independent Living (CIL) began in the 1960's as the Physically Disabled Students Program at the University of California, Berkeley. Founded in 1972 by Edward V. Roberts, Hale Zukas, and Jan McEwan Brown, CIL provides support services that allow people with disabilities to live independently and advocates for social and legal changes on behalf of the disability community.
