Hiking -- California

Note:

The members who formed the California Alpine Club first came together as a YMCA hiking group sometime before 1913. During February and March of that year the San Francisco "Call Bulletin" published a series of articles on outdoor recreation, which led more people to join the YMCA hiking group. In April a formal club was formed under the auspices of the "Call Bulletin," with a constitution and by-laws adopted and officers elected. A year later the club was reorganized as the "California Alpine Club," with the newspaper affiliation dropped. The California Alpine Club was formally incorporated in 1936, and continues to sponsor hikes, publishes the "Trails" newsletter, and owns two lodges: The Alpine Lodge on Mt. Tamalpais in Marin County, and the Echo Summit Lodge overlooking Lake Tahoe in El Dorado County.
