San Jose (Calif.) -- History

Note:

Don Antonio María Suñol was born in Barcelona, Spain on June 13, 1797. Family sympathies toward France during the period of rebellion against Napoleonic rule of Spain prompted Suñol's move to France in 1808. After serving in the French Navy, Suñol came to California in 1818. He settled in San Jose, married into the Bernal family, became a prosperous merchant and landowner, and a benefactor to the Catholic Church. Suñol later held political office in San Jose, and witnessed the historic changes to California that resulted from the 1846 American conquest. He also funded many of John Sutter's enterprises. Suñol died in San Jose on March 18, 1865. The town of Sunol in Alameda County is named after him.
