Online Archive of California

Abstract:

Album contains 172 black and white photographs with borders, each captioned with handwritten descriptions, placed double-sided in corner mounts onto 21 cardstock leaves. The majority of photographs measure 11cm x 7cm, with a few features measuring up to 16cm x 12cm. Album records a journey that began onboard the RMS Georgic, sailing past Gibraltar and the coast of Tangier, making a first stop at Port Said with photos of local inhabitants, an outdoor market, and large vessels on the Suez Canal. Photos of Aden's harbor and the main street; shots of Berbera and Mogadishu in Somaliland. In Kenya, photographs are of the volcanic Mount Longonot, the vast expanse of the Rift Valley, the Kikuyu Reserve, Kisumu and Lake Victoria, and the Chania Falls near Thika. Views of Nairobi, capital of the Colony and Protectorate of Kenya, as well as of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the Longido Volcano, kongoni (hartebeest) and other wildlife; photos of Arusha, Tanganyika (now in Tanzania), the ruins of Gedi and Mombasa. Scenes of the daily lives of the Mbuti Pygmy tribes of the Belgian Congo's Ituri forest (Uganda) are prominent in this album. Also shown are the Pygmies of Bundibugyo, the Amba (Baamba) tribe living in the Ruwenzori Mountain range. Included are images of young children with hunting implements such as arrows and spears, of huts made of slender sticks and palm leaves, and a large drum. Photographs of Uganda, Lake Kivu in the Belgian Congo, a nearby village of grass huts, roaming wild elephants, men and women of Ruanda Urundi, a dugout canoe cruising Lake Bunyonyi, views of Kampala and the Ripon Falls, and a busy cargo dock at Port Bell. The album's last pages include additional scenes from Aden, Yemen. (Derived from vendor descriptive info, Additional derails in CF.)
