Abstract:

One holograph letter written from Washington City to Samuel Guoiner about the author's visit to a Texas battle ground with General Gaines, shortly after the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836, where he saw General Santa Anna and General Almonte held as prisoners of war. An order from General Jackson was needed to decide their fates so, to obtain it, the author traveled to Nashville, Tennessee and eventually met up with him on the Ohio River. General Jackson wrote General Houston and was able to save Santa Anna and Almonte from execution as well as ensure their safe passage to Washington [City]. The following suggestion was also put forth: a Tripartite Agreement or Treaty should be made between the United StatesTexas and Mexico; Mexico should cede to the United States all claims of sovereignty to Texas; a well defined boundary should be fixed by the Treaty; and the United States would settle all outstanding questions between the two nations.
