Abstract:

One holograph letter written and signed by George Henry Preble from Cambridge, Massachusetts to William B. Sewell, Esq. in Kennebunk, Maine about his move from the Navy Yard to Cambridge to serve on the steamer Narragansett in the Pacific for a two year cruise around the 'Horn'. He describes his new house on Mt. Auburn St., his wife being surrounded by old acquaintances and friends, and the birth of his new son, George Henry Rittenhouse Preble.

George Henry Preble was born in Portland, Maine on February 25, 1816 and died in Boston, Massachusetts on March 1, 1885. He was a Rear Admiral in the U.S. Navy and was assigned to command the South Pacific Station. During the Mexican-American War, he participated in the capture of Alvarado, Veracruz, and Tuxpan. He also accompanied Matthew C. Perry to Japan in 1853 and authored numerous books on the Navy.
