Portrait of the organizer of the 11th New York Volunteers Infantry Regiment (New York Zouaves), who had studied law in Lincoln's law office, helping him with the 1860 presidential campaign and accompanying him to Washington, and who was the first prominent casualty of the Civil War, May 24, 1861, the day after Virginia seceded.
