Title:

Burma-Oil photograph album, circa 1886

Creator/Contributor:

Online Archive of California

Abstract:

186 black and white photos (most are approximately 3 ½ X 5 ½ format, but some are full page-size; includes one loose photo) mounted on detached album pages. Photos show indigenous inhabitants and various locales two of which appear to be Burma and perhaps southern China (India also?) and Egypt (Sphinx, pyramid). Southeast Asian style temples, Buddhist iconography depicted. Scenes depicting indigenous peoples and their activities (elephants working, westerners being pulled by rickshaw) as well as many of westerners in groups, coastal and village scenes; also images (related how?) of port scenes, shipboard activities, a dhow- styled sailing ship among others. A number of images that depict oil industry-related activity (including indigenous people using oxcarts to transport piping towards derricks) and exploration, but locale not determined (possibly related to the Burmah Oil Company, a leading British oil business founded in 1886).
