Holograph general order and letters signed by D. G. Farragut, a flag officer in the United States Navy during the American
Civil War who became its first Rear Admiral, Vice Admiral, and Admiral. The general order, written on behalf of D. G. Farragut
on April 26th, 1862 from the U. S. Flag Ship "Hartford", off the City of New Orleans, praises officers and men under his command
for their steadiness, courage, and intrepidity on the mornings of the 24th and 25th during the Capture of New Orleans. The
order is signed by D. G. Farragut, Flag Officer, Western Gulf Blockading Squadron. The first holograph letter, written on
behalf of Farragut on official stationery of the Flagship, Western Gulf Blockading Squadron, is dated July 1st, 1863 in New
Orleans. The letter states Farragut's regret about receiving the invitation to join the Independence festivities too late
to reply but he expects to pay the usual honor due the day with a display of the flags and roar of cannon before Port Hudson,
[Louisiana]. The letter is signed by D. G. Farragut, Rear Admiral, Commanding West Gulf Blockading Squadron. The second holograph
letter, written on behalf of Farragut on official stationery of the Flagship Western Gulf Blockading Squadron (with a line
through the name) is dated September 24th, 1863 from Astor House to the Hon. W. M. Meredith in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The letter asks for information regarding the whereabouts of Meredith's nephew, Paymaster W. T. Meredith, so Farragut can
see him on business. The letter is signed by D. G. Farragut, Rear Admiral.
