Abstract:

Holograph letter written and signed by C. M. Clay to W. H. Crook, Esq. in Washington, D. C. about receiving Crook's letter of March 16 and being glad to do anything to please his [Clay's] friend C. E. Kincaid, Esq. with whom he holds a hereditary family friendship. At the top right corner of the letter is a mounted portrait of Clay.

Cassius Marcellus Clay was an emancipationist from Madison County, Kentucky, who served as the American minister to Russia. When the Civil War began in April 1861, Lincoln nominated Clay as ambassador to Spain, which he declined. Instead, he accepted the post of Minister to the Russian court at St. Petersburg.
