Abstract:

Stereographic silver gelatin photographs of the visit of the Great White Fleet of the United States of America to Australia. Rose Stereograph Company, Melbourne, 1908. 35 original stereographs by Australian photographer George Rose. Images are of a goodwill visit to Australia in 1908, beginning in Auckland, New Zealand. When the fleet arrived in Sydney at Farm Cove on August 20, 1908, approximately 80,000 people stood on South Head to watch the ships enter the harbor. The fleet moved on to Melbourne on August 31, 1908 before returning to home port. Collection includes a stereograph viewer.

The 'Great White Fleet' of the United States Navy was comprised of around 1200 sailors, 16 battleships and five auxiliaries under the command of Rear-Admiral Charles Sperry. The fleet made an around-the-world journey, visiting ports on six continents.
