Collection Overview

Cuban Resort Photograph Album, 1936

Online Archive of California

From dealer description: Photo album: Summer 1936 in a Cuban resort. A photograph album measuring 7 by 10 inches. Contains 32 leaves, each with a 4 3/4 by 7 1/4 inch photograph tipped-on, and one extra photo. A penciled inscription reads "Verano [Summer] 1936." Each photo is stamped on the back "San Miguel de los Banos. Fuente de Juventud [Fountain of Youth]." The photos were developed in Cardenas, Cuba. San Miguel de los Banos is a sulphur springs resort, surrounded by mountains, in west Cuba, about 15 miles from Cardenas and 90 miles from Havana. Its heyday was the first half of the 20th century; today only ruins of its former affluence survive, although it is still a tourist spot. These professional-quality photographs include five overviews of the area, and the activities of a young party of vacationers, enjoying the view from a treehouse, walking through a lush forest, admiring garden grotesques, and posing with a donkey and a Brahma bull. One young man in a sombrero rides a horse and a Brahma bull, holds the bull by the horns, and walks among the palm trees with a rifle. An older man, in two-piece bathing suit, descends the stairs to the springs. One photo is detached; the others are attached with photo corners.
