Dr. Lewis Hodous (1872-1949) was a graduate of the Harford Theological Seminary and served as a missionary (with his wife, the former Anna Jelinik) in China for nearly twenty years while devoting his furloughs to scholarly pursuits and study (University of Leiden) and teaching (Kennedy School of Missions in Hartford). He became a sinologist of note with a special interest in Chinese Buddhism. He published widely in scholarly journals and was also the author various monographs on Chinese history and culture. He was noted for his sympathetic observations of Chinese customs and ways of life. One of his more importantly scholarly works was the well-known Dictionary of Chinese Buddhist Terms (1937) which he co-authored with William E. Soothill. Following his years of service as a missionary, he remained active in teaching and research until his retirement.
