Abstract:

Contains materials associated with the Two Cents Project, a regular weekly newspaper column that featured comments by the general public associated to particular news stories of the day.The bulk of the collection consists of newspaper sections and tear sheets that include Two Cents columns that ran alongside particular news stories and others that display news stories in which member of Two Cents Project served as sources. Files include a history of the project, recruiting announcement, industry journals with stories of the project, a presentation certificate from the Inland Press Association, a presentation portfolio for the Knight Foundation's Batten Awards for Innovation in Journalism, photocopies of project creator Heidi Swillinger's favorite columns and printouts of email responses to the farewell announcement.

The Two Cents Project of the San Francisco Chronicle was a groundbreaking experiment in social media that linked the print age with the digital age. It featured associated commentary by members of the general public on various news stories of the day. The project, headed by Heidi Swillinger, won honors from the Knight Foundation's first national Batten Awards for Innovation in Journalism.
