Five letters from Stephen T. King (7 p.) and three letters from James L. King (10 p.) to their brother John H. King describing events and every day circumstances of business in San Francisco. One letter is a personal account of fighting the fire that provides numerous details including specific intersections and buildings burned in the blaze and the effect on their own business. Stephen's membership in the Knickerbocker #5 Fire Brigade is also noted in the letter. Other correspondence gives details of shipping and cargo information including ships and captain names, departure and arrival dates, requests for shipping and cargo information in New York, references to Stephen King taking controlling interest in a newspaper (California Spirit of the Times and Fireman's Journal) and becoming its editor. The letters have a brotherly tone and often begin with a note about a check being enclosed for the support of the family and the amount. In one letter, Stephen chastizes John in New York for his lack of accomplishments due to his fondness for expensive clothes. He also recounts details of photographs that John has sent and offers his critique on how to wear his collar in a more fashionable and appropriate way. Stephen writes of his interest in politics as the editor of the Democratic Organ and a supporter of James Buchanan for president as well as his hopes for running for the State Senate himself. The letter dated March 4, 1860 is written on two pages of Wells Fargo Co., New York and California Express and Exchanges Company letterhead stationery. Includes a newspaper clipping [Daily Evening News?], dated July 11, 1854, reporting a very large fire that began in the Golden Gate Hotel and destroyed 70 to 80 buildings. On the verso side of the article are numerous advertisements for steamer ship and ferry boat schedules, hotels, a bakery, bonnets, ivory brushes, land, paper, and liquor.
