Established in 1960 as a tax-exempt foundation by the Sierra Club but independent of it. During the first several years of
its existence, Colburn Wilbur served as its executive secretary. The Foundation is currently (1992) directed by Stephen M.
Stevick and the Board of Trustees. Foundation grants are made to Sierra Club chapters, groups, programs, and projects, as
well as a few other environmental organizations.
The Sierra Club Foundation began transferring records to The Bancroft Library in 1989.
