Where possible, the original catalog system has been retained. Books with original marks have been retained in their original
position in the sequence; gaps have been filled with unmarked designations except where the gap was in the middle of a set
of volumes. In such cases, the gap was retained, and a list of the missing volumes made. Catalog numbers are to be read as
follows: Roman numeral: case number; Arabic numeral: number within case; "om": original mark.

One copy of this catalog is in the possession of the Carmel Mission.
The books in the Mission library were originally cataloged under Fr. Fermín Lasuen in about 1800. The books present then were
marked by numbering in ink on a white paint or gesso label on the spine. The books were arranged in four cases according to
size (largest, Case I) and numbered within the cases. Case V was added. It contains books dating from after the mission period,
belonging to Frs. Casanova, Mestres, McLaughlin, and others.
