Title:
[Snapshot photograph album of Helen Taylor, a student at the California Institution for the Deaf and the Blind.]
Creator/Contributor:
Taylor, Helen M., approximately 1898-, creator, creator.
Abstract:
Chiefly snapshots of the childhood and early adulthood of Helen Taylor of Los Alamitos, Calif., and her student years at the
California Institution for the Deaf and Blind in Berkeley. A few photographs show school interiors: a wood shop, drawing class,
printing class, and science lab. In one photograph two girls pose, signing. A few school building exteriors are also present,
as well as some football teams of 1914 and 1915, and a few views on the campus of the University of California. Most photographs
are informal outdoor poses of classmates (presumably deaf students) on the grounds of the school or on outings in the San
Francisco Bay Area. Others may be of family or family friends, often on excursions. Most photographs are unidentified, but
places identified include Los Alamitos, Franklin Canyon in Santa Barbara County, Carpenteria (for a beach outing), Ontario,
and Kansas. Also present are clippings of printed images of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition and some from the
Panama-California Exposition in San Diego.

The Helen Taylor pictured in the album is identifiable based on the presence of a 1920 Sunday school certificate laid in the
album, bearing the name David Taylor, and the presence of several photographs captioned Los Alamitos. In the 1910 and 1920
census, Helen M. (born about 1897-1899) and David Taylor (born 1905) are found in the household of their parents, George and
Mary Taylor. George was a railway station agent, and in 1920 they lived in Los Alamitos, Calif.
