In 1973, Stephen Kinsey wrote his Master's thesis about the development of the San Jose Jewish community. Per his findings:
a small Jewish community in San Jose, California received land from the city for a cemetery in 1857. In 1861, Congregation
Bikur Cholim, which became the focus for Jewish activities, was organized. That early Jewish community and congregation was
the basis for the present day Jewish community in San Jose.
