Abstract:
Bound manuscript ship log kept by Captain Edward Von Schmidt containing dated entries from August 15 to October 30, 1883 for
a voyage of the Hawaiian steamship, Kinau, from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Honolulu, Hawaii via Cape Horn. There are 79
pages of entries and the rest are blank. The first page contains the names of the crew, ship owner, and passengers onboard.
Most entries include typical ship observations of weather, location, speed, etc. Also includes 4 pages of personal observations
made by Von Schmidt titled, "Personal impressions of the Straits of Magellan, climate & people. People of Tierra del Fuego."
These include extended observations about an attractive young woman of 16 or 17 who was acting as a local coxswain in Tierra
del Fuego harbor. Also includes a handwritten letter of recommendation for Von Schmidt (1 page), dated August 24, 1883, from
a New York shipping firm, W.H. Crossman & Bro, on their printed letterhead stationery and envelope, addressed to Senors Montiero,
Hime, & Ca. of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Also includes a handwritten letter to Von Schmidt (2 pages + envelope), dated August
12, 1883, from his father, A.W. Von Schmidt, in San Francisco, California containing details of a canal engineering project
and advising caution about navigating a ship in the Atlantic. Also includes a photograph of a shirtless middle-aged man, standing
in cut-off white trousers, likely Edward Von Schmidt (albumen; 17 x 11 cm); mounted on card stock of [John E.] Nast photography
studio located at the corner of Park and Santa Clara Streets in Alameda, California.
