Abstract:
Six letters with envelopes (15 p.), six b&w photographs, and two newspaper clippings from and about Burgey family members
serving in different capacities in the U.S. Army with Gen. Pershing and Lt. Patton during the hunt for Pancho Villa in Mexico.
The newspaper clipping from The Evening Leader in Corning, N.Y. (dated Tuesday, March 21, 1916) is about then Col. Berry
serving as Gen. Pershing's intelligence officer during the Mexico Expedition and includes a photograph of the colonel. The
other clipping is from an El Paso newspaper with an account of a skirmish with Mexicans and several photographs of Army soldiers
near Pershing's camp at Namiquipa. Photographs include a Pach Brothers portrait of Lucien Grant Berry (likely Sam Burgey's
uncle) in a West Point uniform (dated 1886) and another portrait photo of Berry in military uniform at middle age. Other photos
include: a portrait of two young men in military uniforms, a smaller portrait of one of the men, five men in military uniforms
standing in front of a car with the U.S. and Army General flags on it, and two men holding a small dead bird between them
in a remote desert setting. Five of the letters are from Sam Burgey to his mother Lucy and sister Maud. Details include his
work as a driver and mechanic for Gen. Pershing, his account of an encounter with "Villistas" involving Lieut. Patton that
resulted in Mexican deaths, and several references to seeing and meeting with "L" (likely Lucien Berry). One of the letters
is from an E. M. Berry to Maud Burgey and mentions "Lucien" several times. Original envelopes addressed from New Mexico and
New York are in the folder.
