Auerbach, Herbert S. (Herbert Samuel), 1882-1945

Abstract:

Consists primarily of memoirs of Samuel H. Auerbach, composed late in life, recounting family history, including detailed anecdotal account of youthful experiences in Germany, migration to New York, voyage to California via Panama, and life in La Porte, California, Austin, Nevada and, finally, Salt Lake City. He also recounts travel experiences in the U.S. and elsewhere. The memoir offers detailed observations on business practices and conditions, social conditions, and relations among religious groups, as well as extremely detailed physical descriptions of buildings and businesses in Salt Lake City. His son, Herbert S. Auerbach, expanded on Samuel's memoirs and incorporated a large-scale account of the history of the Mormons in Utah.
