Interviews conducted 1978 by Ruth Teiser and Catherine Harroun for the Regional Oral History Office, Bancroft Library. Introduction by Warren R. Howell. Copies of photographs inserted. Comments on career of his father, Thomas E. Shumate, as physician, pharmacist, and San Francisco police commissioner; growing up in San Francisco; his own medical career as dermtologist: development of interest in history; California Historical Society and other groups in which he was active; landmarks and other architectural preservation efforts in San Francisco; association with Catholic organizations; writing activities; etc.
