Ruth-Inge Heinze (1919-2017) was born in Berlin, Germany. She had a successful acting career in Berlin before immigrating
to the United States. Heinze moved to the Bay Area in 1956, and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1962. She founded the
Art Repertory Theatre, which trained actors and produced German plays. Heinze received her Ph.D. from the University of California,
Berkeley in Asian Studies in 1974. She received a Fulbright to study Shamanism in Southeast Asia, and lived and traveled extensively
in Asia for more than 30 years. Her books include Trance and Healing in Southeast Asia Today, Shamans of the Twentieth Century,
and The Nature and Function of Rituals. Heinze taught courses in the psychology of shamanism and Eastern Psychologies at the
Saybrook Institute, and was an adjunct faculty member at Mills Colleage, University of California, Berkeley, and the California
Institute of Integral Studies. Heinze was founder and president of Independent Scholars of Asia. In 1984, she initiated the
organization's annual meeting, the International Conference on the Study of Shamanism and Alternate Modes of Healing, to share
insights in the field of alternate healing and preserve the integrity of shamanism.
