Collection Overview

[Roy Tanabe family photograph album of Japanese Americans in Hawaii]

Tanabe family, creator, creator.

Chiefly snapshots documenting childhood of Roy Tanabe from the year of his birth in 1940 to his high school years in the mid-1950s, mostly in Honolulu County. Roy's parents and many other Japanese-American family members and friends are also depicted. Chiefly containing domestic scenes of Roy and his family, album also includes class portraits of school children; Junior Police Officers in uniform; a series of images of a flooded town; scenes of the construction of a monument possibly honoring World War II veterans of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team; scenes of Roy as teenager in Waimea Canyon, Kauai; scenes of a City of Fresno float at a football game; at least one scene taken on the Japanese island of Miyajima; a scene of campaign signs posted outside the Waialua Court House; and a few images depicting Japanese American soldiers in various settings. Also includes a certificate of merit from Waialua Elementary School, a printed Japanese document with the signature of Kenichi Tanabe, and a clipping of a newspaper article mentioning Roy's reception of the Walter L. Emory award for drafting at Honolulu Technical School. There appears to be no documentation of wartime evacuation or relocation of Japanese Americans.
