Original photographs compiled to illustrate Day's unpublished memoir Glory in My Hand. Includes World War II scenes documented
by Day during his military service as a war photographer: U.S. Army soldiers during naval passage to Europe; various locations
in London; American and English soldiers at leisure prior to the invasion of Normandy; ruins of the French towns of Carentan
and Saint-Lô; the liberation of Paris; and the concentration camp at Dachau shortly after its liberation, some views depicting
bodies of dead inmates. Includes a few photographs of Day and William Saroyan, as well as one photograph each of Charles
de Gaulle in Paris, and Harry S. Truman and Joseph Stalin at the Potsdam Conference. Also includes photographs of documents
pertaining to the Bronze Star and Za Zasluhy medals awarded to Day.

Russell E. Day was a United States Army photographer in World War II. From his citation for Bronze Star Medal: "Technician
Fourth Grade Russell E. Day (then Private, Private First Class and Technician Fifth Grade), 39559742, Infantry, United States
Army, for meritorious service as a member of the Special Motion Picture Unit, PRD, Supreme Headquaters, Allied Expeditionary
Force, from 1 June 1944 to 8 May 1945. Technician Fourth Grade Day displayed courage, initiative, and resourcefulness in obtaining
photographic coverage of combat activities. His services reflect great credit upon himself and the armed forces of the United
States. Entered military service from California." Day was also awarded the Za Zasluhy, a non-combat medal for military merit
from Czechoslovakia. Day covered the invasion of Normandy. Day and William Saroyan were transported to Europe in World War
II on the same ship.
